James Nelson Ervin was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on May 6, 1873. He received his school training at Knoxville College in Tennessee and became a principal of the Langston School of Johnson City, Tenn., where he served for more than 15 years. While serving as president of Jarvis Christiam College in Hawkins, Texas, from 1914 to 1938, Ervin influenced many students from Dallas to attend the college.
