Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the world's best known advocates for social change through non-violence. He synthesized ideas drawn from many different cultural traditions. King was born Michael Luther King in Atlanta on Jan. 25, 1929. He was one of three children of Martin Luther King, Sr., pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Alberta (Williams) King, a former school teacher. He was the grandson of the Rev. A. D. Williams, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church and founder of Atlanta's NAACP chapter. His father succeeded Williams as Ebenezer's pastor and also became a civil rights leader.
