Thomas L. Marsalis was born in Mississippi, near New Orleans, La., on Oct. 4, 1852. Marsalis moved to Dallas in 1872 and opened a wholesale grocery operation. By 1877, his business was making $750,00 worth of business annually.

Thomas L. Marsalis formed the Dallas Land and Loan Company in 1887. His initial real estate purchase was 2,000 acres of rocky cliffs and fields across the Trinity River from downtown Dallas, named Oak Cliff. Through this venture, Marsalis provided land to the city to construct what is now the Dallas Zoo. He also served as president of the Oak Cliff Hotel Company, Oak Cliff Light and Power Company, Oak Cliff Railroad Company, and the Oak Cliff Water Supply Company.
