Charles Cato Rice was born in Thomasville, Ga., in the 1850s. Born into slavery, he was sold and traded seven times before gaining his freedom. After the Civil War, he attended Atlanta University. Rice then moved to Dallas in 1896 and taught music for elementary school students at Dallas Colored School No. 1, which was renamed Norris Wright Cuney Elementary School. From 1908 to 1913, he was principal of Dallas Colored School No. 2. Charles Cato Rice died in 1915.
