John Paul Starks (1866-1923) was a leader and advocate for education in the black community and in civic affairs. A pioneer in the Dallas education system, Starks began his career in the Dallas Public School system in 1884, for which he worked for 39 years. In 1895, he became the principal of the Fredrick Douglass Elementary School. He was instrumental in persuading the school board to build the first brick elementary school for African Americans in Dallas. He also influenced the Dallas school board to purchase property on Flora, Good, and Munger streets, where Booker T. Washington High School was built. One year after his death, the first J. P. Starks School was named in his honor. It was demolished in 1972 and a new school was built in his honor and dedicated in the fall of 1987.
