Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Her brother, Bailey, who was only a year older, called her "My sister," which was eventually contracted to "Maya." Maya grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and Stamps, Arkansas. The first Black woman director in Hollywood, she is a mother, poet, author, historian, songwriter, playwright, dancer, stage and screen producer, director, performer, singer, and civil rights activist. A mesmerizing vision of grace, swaying and stirring when she moves, Dr. Angelou captivates her audiences lyrically with vigor, fire, and perception. She has the unique ability to shatter the opaque prisms of race and class between reader and subject throughout her books of poetry and her autobiographies. She is best known for her autobiographical books and poetry. Dr. Angelou has authored twelve best-selling books including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and A Song Flung Up to Heaven.

In 1959, at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Maya Angelou became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. From 1961 to 1962, she was associate editor of The Arab Observer in Cairo, Egypt; and from 1964 to 1966, she was feature editor of the African Review in Accra, Ghana. In 1981, Dr. Angelou was appointed to a lifetime position as the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. In 1993, at the request of President Bill Clinton, Dr. Angelou wrote and delivered a poem, "On the Pulse of Morning," for his inauguration. She became only the second poet in U.S. History to have the honor of writing and reciting original work at the Presidential Inauguration. Dr. Angelou continues to travel the world making appearances and spreading her legendary wisdom.
