We Need YOU to Help Us Rename Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard!Although the final decision will be made by our SBDM Committee during our November 19th meeting, everyone can have a hand in suggesting a new name for Lanier! Complete this form to suggest a new name to be considered.
Why Are We Renaming?Sidney Lanier was an accomplished poet, musician, and academic of southern heritage, which is why the school was originally named after him, and why it kept his name when the school became an Expressive Arts Vanguard in the early 1970s. Lanier was also a confederate soldier during the American Civil War, and as he gained professional success following the war, he came to be known as "the poet of the Confederacy." This strong connection to the Confederacy and the history and culture of racism and segregation that such an association suggests has caused many in our community and our district to pause and consider whether this name is appropriate moving forward. Through our reflections and conversations, it has become clear that the time has come to rename this incredible school with a name more in keeping with the values that we hold. This is where we need you! Please suggest a new name using the Nomination Form. The nominating window will be open until November 6th.
