• Portfolio presentation is a required course for 11th grade students in the Dance program. The course is designed to prepare students for Dance Senior Showcase, a professional career in dance and ensures college readiness. Faculty members serve as mentors and work closely with students developing their interests and individual goals. As the facilitator of instruction, the role of the mentor is to provide structure, guidance, feedback and support to the process. Students are encouraged and expected to self-direct, self-evaluate and define the purpose and intent of their overall goals. Guest artists currently working in the field of dance, speakers from the Arts community and students from various college dance programs will interact with students throughout the semester. As a result of instruction and meeting requirements for the course, each student will be able to: conduct and research careers in dance, colleges, and scholarships, create a video portfolio, write a resume, biography, and personal and artist statement. In addition, students participate in mock auditions and are taken through an interview process to improve and develop presentation and communication skills. The creative process continues with the choreographic development and performance of three solos. Students work independently and collaboratively with their peers to create the final product. Portfolio presentation prepares students for post-secondary options, meets and exceeds the career preparation requirements for Booker T. Washington HSPVA.
