I hope that this update finds each of you happy, healthy, safe, and at home during this COVID-19 pandemic. This last month has brought unprecedented changes for each of our lives. Additionally, it’s changed how Dallas ISD and school districts across the nation are operating. I’m proud of the immediate action that Dallas ISD has taken to support all of our students, families, and employees in the face of this crisis. We will emerge from this stronger and more together than ever!
Dallas ISD & District 7 Updates:
Most of this month’s work has focused around the immediate response to the COVID-19 crisis that has turned education upside-down. Dallas ISD teachers and staff were forced to change gears completely, at a moment’s notice, and have worked tirelessly to transform traditional education into distance learning.  Below are stories and updates regarding the district’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Dallas ISD Continues to Serve Meals to Families: Recognizing that Dallas ISD is usually a major source of food for students during the course of the year, Dallas ISD has continued to offer ‘Grab-and-Go’ meal service at schools across Dallas for families who need it! During the first three days of bulk grab-and-go meal service, Dallas ISD provided 526,725 meals to 58,525 students.

    • Following recommendations from Dallas County in order to protect the health and safety of our families and staff, beginning on Thursday, April 2, Dallas ISD will only distribute grab-and-go meals on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students will be provided with enough meals to get them through the following week.

Approval of $2.5 million for Internet Hotspots: The Dallas ISD school board convened last week for its first, virtual board meeting. I voted to approve the purchase of 10,000 mobile hotspots for students to help close the digital divide across the city of Dallas. All middle and high school students who don’t have internet access can contact their campus principal to request one. Students to be able to access their work and stay connected to learning while our schools remain closed during this crisis.

    Upcoming Events:

    • Thursday, April 9 at 11:30 a.m.: Dallas ISD virtual board briefing
    • Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m.: Dallas ISD virtual board meeting
