Biography:
James Mays II has worked 33 years in Dallas ISD and 31 at South Oak Cliff High School, where he has been the head boys’ basketball coach since 1999. He is in his 13th year as the school’s athletic coordinator. Mays is a 1989 graduate of Prairie View A&M University, where he played baseball and received a bachelor’s of business administration in finance.
His basketball teams have made the UIL playoffs all 24 years he has been the head coach, and his overall coaching record is 585-199. His teams hav won four state championships (2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008), have made a total of five state tournament appearances, and have appeared in nine regional tournaments.
Mays has won DFW coach of the year honors in 2005 and 2008 and was the 2005 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year. He also has been honored as district coach of the year 14 times. Mays coached the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star game in 2008 and Dallas ISD All-Star game in 2003, winning both games.
Mays also served on the Texas High School Coaches Association basketball advisory committee from 2015-2016. He lectures at various clinics across the city, state, and country. He has received several civic awards for his work in the community. He is a member of Friendship West Baptist Church and serves on the security ministry. Mays is a past master in Dallas Masonic Lodge No. 654.
He and his wife Jannifer have three children, James III, Jakobi, and Jordan.
