E. Lee Fischer

I was born and raised in Shreveport, LA. I moved to Texas in college. I live in Lake Highlands with my husband and my 2 year old daughter.

I believe in the value of creating life-long artists. I think the way to do this is to teach students how to be artists, not how to "make" art. Teaching for Artistic Behavior or TAB-Choice is the way I teach. TAB-Choice means all of the artwork coming out of the Mata art studio is student conceptualized and created from choosing the subject of the artwork to the materials. Being an artist is about so much more than the finished artwork. The actual thought process of making art is so significant, and teaching our children about that process is invaluable to their future.

The Studio Habits of Mind, which are the 8 ways our brain thinks as art is being created, are a great tool to help the students understand how to think like an artist. Knowing how to think like an artist through the Studio Habits is one of the most important things we focus on in the art studio. The students use the Studio Habits to help write artist statements for each finished work of art. The artist statement explains the thought process behind their artwork. This helps students understand how the process of making art is just as important as their final project. I know every child is an artist, and I love to watch each child realize his or her artistic potential.

Please let me know if you have any questions about my curriculum or your student. I am always eager to talk about my art students.
