Welcome to the Visual and Performing Arts Deparment! Thank you for visiting us here.
Former US Secretary of Education, William Bennet, writes, “The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing and arithmetic... music, dance, painting and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment”.
The Visual and Performing Arts Department of Dallas ISD proudly serves more than 150,000 students in the disciplines of dance, music, theatre and visual art. We are honored to be a part of the communities.
The Booker T. Washington HSPVA Wind Ensemble, directed by Larry Schnitzer, has been named a 2020 national winner in the Mark of Excellence Recording Project sponsored by the Foundation for Music Education.
“The Mark of Excellence project seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance by high school and middle school bands, choirs and orchestras. The project gathers entries from throughout the United States and provides valuable feedback for all entrants. A unique competitive environment is created which allows ensembles to compare their performance quality to other outstanding groups from across the country. The top 25% of entrants are recognized as National Winners, with the second 25% named as Commended Winners.”
The band submitted performances from their March 7th concert at Booker T. Washington HSPVA and March 9th concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Selections entered were: Patriots on Parade Through Boston Common (wearing red socks) by Jacob Schnitzer and Downtown Divertimento by Johan de Meij.
This is the second selection of this award by the Booker T. Washington HSPVA Wind Ensemble (2016).
