Mrs. Olivia Santos

As a student I learned the impact of an educator can be life-long. I was painfully shy and consistently nervous about being engaged in the classroom. Fortunately, when I was in second grade, I had one particular teacher whose passion for her profession, creative and innovative approach to education and willingness to go the extra mile turned everything around for me. It was at this point in my life that I was determined to become an educator and emulate her keen ability to both engage and inspire students.

After graduating from SMU in 2005, I began teaching in East Dallas. I loved the challenges of being a teacher and every minute I spent with my students.  We focused on both social emotional skills and academic skills collaboratively through student-driven project based learning, and small group instruction.

In an effort to broaden my scope of influence, I earned my master’s degree in educational leadership in 2016 and decided to seek out leaders who were in the midst of transforming education. I became an instructional coach under the leadership of Dr. Bernardino at John Quincy Adams. After hearing about Solar, it was not long before I decided I had to follow these daring trailblazers. Thankfully, I was hired to be on the founding leadership team at Solar where I have been  able to put into practice all of the research, knowledge and skills I have cultivated to help to create the framework and curriculum for this innovative school.
The last three years at Solar have been nothing short of incredible. I have had the opportunity to learn from the very best leaders, Dr. Bernardino and Ms. Turner, and the privilege of working side by side with the most remarkable teachers. At Solar, my favorite part of everyday is getting to see the excitement for learning in our Solar girls. I am tremendously proud of the impact we have made and continue to make on the future of education in our district.

As an Assistant Principal, I am looking forward to contributing in a different capacity. As a founding member of the leadership team, I am deeply committed to the success of this school and will give  my all to ensure we continue to move Solar forward and provide the highest level of instruction and support to our scholars. I am eager to deepen my relationships with the Solar families and community and continue to watch our girls continue to be the unstoppable trailblazers they are meant to be.

Fun facts about me:
  • I love playing board games, reading, drawing and flower arranging in my spare time.
  • I was born in Houston but lived in South Texas for most of my childhood.
  • Wiords to live by: “To embrace creativity, let go of comparison. If you are concerned with conforming, you won’t perform the risk taking and trailblazing inherent in creative endeavors.” – Brene Brown
  • I think all girls’ education is important because it allows girls to  learn the value of supporting one another and building each other up, which are both fundamental to the advancement of women.
  • I love reading! My favorite author is probably J.K. Rowling, but I also love reading non-fiction books by Brene Brown and Tom and David Kelley.
  • I have two daughters; my oldest one, Alessandra will be attending Solar this fall in Pre-K!
