Ms. Karen Isbell, a veteran teacher who has taught English for twenty-two years, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the classroom. From the time when Ms. Isbell graduated with her high school’s “Outstanding English Student” award, Ms. Isbell knew that she loved to study and share the power of literature and writing! Ms. Isbell is TEA certified in English, ESL and Speech Communications and teaches English II, Pre-AP here at collegiate.
In 1994, Ms. Isbell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Dallas. She soon transferred to the University of Texas at Dallas, where she graduated with a Master of Arts in Arts and Humanities with a concentration in Literary Studies. Ms. Isbell also studied education, teaching and linguistics as a graduate student, earning an endorsement in English as a Second Language.
In 1996, Ms. Isbell began her teaching career at Brookhaven College, teaching all English, Speech and ESL courses. In 2000, she joined Maya Angelou High School for Pregnant and Parenting Teens, where she taught English to grades 6-12. Finally, Ms. Isbell decided to join our Collegiate Academy in our inaugural year, inspired by our school’s vision of empowering youth to achieve their college dreams!
In all her classes, Ms. Isbell works to build relevance between her lessons and students’ lives. She also loves to share her own life lessons, often inspired by her lifelong love of poetry, the arts, global understanding and multicultural intelligence.
