  • Title: Encouraging a Sense of Wonder in PK-2 Science Classrooms

    Description:

Engaging young children in meaningful, longer-lasting science learning is challenging, but also worthwhile. During this webinar, teachers will explore inquiry-based lessons that nurture curiosity and even joy in the youngest scientists. Activities will be organized into sections on animals, plants, and nature walks. Rather than merely presenting science facts to 3- to 7-year-olds, teachers will learn ways to prompt students to make discoveries of their own as they explore critter camouflage, probe pumpkin insides, make bird feeders, and more.  Teachers who attend this workshop will receive a copy of the NSTA Press Book, A Head Start on Science: Encouraging a Sense of Wonder.

  • Title: Best Practices in PK-2 Science Classrooms

    Description:

Engaging young children in meaningful, longer-lasting science learning is challenging, but also worthwhile. During this webinar, teachers will explore research-based best practices that include scientific investigation and reasoning in early childhood, the 5E instructional model for teaching science, and the essential features of classroom inquiry and their variations. Teachers will discuss how to differentiate labs and integrate reading, writing, math, and social studies into science labs. Teachers will also network with each other as they plan how to implement best practices at their campus.

  • Title: Wiggling Worms: Creating a Vermi-compost for Decomposition Investigations

    Description:

Join the STEM Environmental Education Center as we learn how to create a cheap and easy indoor vermi-compost. A vermi-compost is a low maintenance worm habitat used to recycle food waste and has many content applications in the classroom. Learn how to captivate your student’s interests by incorporating live organisms and animal care into your science lessons. In this hands-on workshop educators will learn how to create a worm habitat and how to care for their worms. In addition, educators will conduct lab investigations to learn about the physical characteristics and behaviors of worms and explore soil properties, the process of decomposition and the important role of decomposers.
