Mrs. Mayra Trillo
Mayra Trillo is the Physical Education teacher at Solar Preparatory School for Girls. She grew up in Dallas and attended Dallas ISD schools from prekindergarten through 5th grade, until her family moved to the suburbs. Mayra pursued an education in business, leaving behind her passion for helping others. After 4 years in the corporate world, she knew that it was time for a change. That change came in the form of joining the Dallas ISD Teacher Alternative Certification Program.
In 2009, Mayra began her teaching career at Lorenzo de Zavala elementary in West Dallas. During her time there, she lead the 2-way dual language prekindergarten program. She underwent extensive early childhood training through The Children’s Learning Institute. Having had such an incredible first year of teaching, Mayra was nominated for Teacher of the Year for her Alternative Certification Class.
In 2012, Mayra decided to take a big leap and teach 5th grade at a Leader in Me School. As part of the school’s leadership program, Mayra was responsible for designing and teaching language arts and social studies lessons that incorporated Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. She also lead a one-to-one digital classroom that implemented a 1-way dual language program. To her surprise, she enjoyed her years in 5th grade just as much as her years teaching PreK.
Itching for yet another challenge, Mayra pursued her certification in physical education. She loved to see how her PreK students benefited from educational games and physical movement, but noticed that these types of activities lessened in the upper grades. Mayra knew that she could provide an atmosphere where children could have a great time being physically active, while learning how to make healthy life choices. She was thrilled at the opportunity to join the Solar Prep family in 2017 as a physical educator.
At Solar, Mayra has coached track and trained scholars to participate and earn numerous medals in the district sport stacking tournament. In addition, she helped bring tennis instruction on campus as an after school club. Last year, she piloted the Drum Fit program for the school district and will be overseeing its implementation this year.
As the first in her family to earn a Bachelor’s degree, Mayra understands and values the importance of education. As a woman who wears many hats, she knows that good health is a key component to living your best life.
