In addition to teaching performance skills, the band teaches the scholar to be an active thinking individual. For each note played, there are numerous considerations and instantaneous decisions to make. How loud or soft? How fast or slow? How does the note start? How does it end? Who else plays it? Am I in tune? Nowhere else on campus is the demand for the active thought any stronger.Unlike most other classes, the band offers a wide variety of opportunities for the scholar. It is one of the only classes where excellence is not only expected but essential to success. In-band, everyone MUST achieve to the highest level, or performance will sound terrible. Even one person making a grade of ”60” on a piece of music means 40% of the notes were played in error; not pleasant to hear!Meet the Directors
Mr. William Allen, Head Band Director
While being a Southern University graduate and "Human Jukebox" marching band alumnus, Mr. Allen is a remarkably uplifting man and profound Educator. He has worked with our youth & communities in both Texas and Louisiana through music and through his leadership positions for at least 10 years. He has saved and inspired many lives with him mentoring the youth through educating them on life experiences and struggles of him growing up and how he prevailed.
Mr. Kenneth Clark, Assistant Director/Percussion Instructor
While being a Prairie View A&M graduate and "Marching Storm" marching band alumnus, Mr. Clark is a native of Dallas, TX, and has been educating at South Oak Cliff since 2011. He has groomed and trained students from South Oak Cliff and surrounding schools to carry on their talents into college and the professional music world.

What Ensemble Can You Join?
Marching Band
The marching band primarily rehearses and performs during the fall football season. This ensemble requires our scholars to be physically fit and exude the high energy of show-style band showmanship. The marching band excels in UIL marching and Battle of the Band events every fall. Are you ready to be a member of this top tier group?
Jazz Band
The Nu Soul of the South Jazz Consortium is an ensemble comprised of our top musicians. Our jazz program allows our students the liberty of expressing themselves organically through music. Do you have what it takes to be a member of our award-winning jazz program?
Concert Band
The Nu Soul of the South Concert Band meets in the Spring semester. As does the marching band, the concert band allows our scholars to be exposed to a wide variety of genres and cultures through the repertoire we perform. As the marching band, we participate in UIL concert and sight-reading evaluations every Spring. Will you be with our concert band this upcoming Spring?
Pep Band
Our pep band and small ensembles perform at various venues. These groups perform in much smaller numbers and are able to move at a moment's notice. It takes much planning and manpower to move 100+ members. The pep band and small ensembles are much more feasible to assemble in many instances rather than the whole band. These ensembles are comprised of our top players and are well-rehearsed. Are you pep band material?
