Are the Reading Academies mandatory?
Yes. A key feature of House Bill 3 requires all kindergarten through third-grade teachers and elementary principals to complete the Texas Reading Academies before the end of the 2022-23 school year.
Who is required to participate in the Reading Academies?
I have attended a Reading Academy in the past. Would I be required to attend this one?
Yes. The HB3 Reading Academies are different from other Reading Academies that have been offered in the past. If you are a K-3 teacher or administrator, you will be required to complete the academy.
I am a Master Reading Teacher. Can I be exempt from the Reading Academies?
No. Holding a Master Reading Teacher certification or any other advanced certification in Reading will not exempt you from the Reading Academies if you are a required participant.
I am a part-time Gifted/Talented teacher. Would I still need to participate?
Yes. All GT teachers in elementary have to join.
What are the training dates for the Reading Academies?
For the 2020-2021 school year (Year 1), training for teachers will take place on August 20-21, August 26, September 1, September 26, January 4, and on select after-school days between September and April. Trainings are full day from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., with the exception of the after-school sessions which are 90-minutes long.
I am a teacher and was just informed that I would need to return 3 days earlier in the fall. Why is that?
The Reading Academies will be one of the biggest investments in every teacher's professional learning. To ensure that all required content can be covered in the specific time frame, teachers will be returning 3 days before their contract. However, teachers will be compensated for the time they are required to spend off contract. (See the stipend question)
Where will the Reading Academies take place?
Trainings will be LIVE synchronous and will take place via video conference. Cohort leaders will provide Zoom links to participants in advance of training.
Will training be face-to-face or virtual?
There are two formats for the Reading Academy: Comprehensive (face-to-face virtual) and Blended (online). Most campuses will participate in the comprehensive format with a few OTI and Magnet campuses piloting the blended format in 2020-21.
Do I need to register for the Reading Academies?
Yes. You will be required to register for your cohort through TEA. Registration is now closed for the 2020-2021 school year.
Who will be delivering the Reading Academies?
Early Learning Instructional Specialists will be leading the Reading Academies. They are referred to as Cohort Leaders by TEA and have been TEA approved and trained in the Reading Academies. These specialists will also provide Kinder to third grade coaching support on each Reading Academy campus.
How long are the Reading Academies?
Dallas ISD has put together a three year phasing plan to train all current staff. Each campus will complete the academy (see Schedule/Timeline) during their assigned year, and will do so over the course of 10 training days.
Will makeup opportunities be available for missed sessions?
We understand that emergencies arise and will arrange for makeup opportunities on an individual basis. These makeup sessions will likely be blended (online); however, participants can make up no more than 4 days of training.
How will changes due to leveling, late hires, mid-year transfers, and promotions be addressed?
Participants assuming a new position on or before September 25, would be able to participate, as they can make up the first four days of training. All new hires after September 25 would have to wait until the next school year to participate.
Will participants receive district PD credit hours?
No. The majority of the trainings occur during work hours on contract days, and for training outside of contract days, a stipend is provided for teachers. PD hours are also not required by Dallas ISD in 2020-21. Teachers can count the hours towards any continuing education for certification.
Will teachers receive a stipend?
Yes! Stipends are $1200 per teacher and will be paid out in June upon successful completion of the Reading Academies.
Will non-teacher participants receive a stipend?
No. Only teachers will receive stipends. All other participants will be joining on contract time. Update: With the addition of a Saturday training day, September 26, librarians and campus instructional coaches (CICs) enrolled in the teacher track, will receive compensation for attending training on that day.
