The Latin American Ensemble was renamed in 2008 to reflect its true artistic focus: to showcase music of the Americas. Thus, it performs works not only from the Afro-Cuban tradition (commonly designated as “salsa”), but of all other continental traditions (Brazil, Puerto Rico, etc.) The LAE had the distinct honor of earning the first ever DOWNBEAT award in Latin Jazz for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
