• Dallas ISD Recruiting Literacy Volunteers to Build Student Reading Skills

BE A BOOK BUDDY: Dallas ISD’s volunteer literacy tutor program, Book Buddies, is looking for volunteers to tutor 1st-, 2nd-, or 3rd- grade students. School personnel will configure the best tutor/tutee match and scheduling for those involved. As an example, volunteers may be matched with two students and work with each once a week in a 30-minute tutoring session. Each student is paired with two volunteers so they receive a minimum of one hour of tutoring a week. Pending approval, tutoring may be provided in an online or virtual environment.

No experience is required to become a tutor. Volunteers will be trained and supported to be effective tutors. The most important requirement is that tutors commit to a consistent schedule of one hour a week.  Long term commitment preferred (semester, October-December or school year)

    Responsibilities:

    • Attend a tutor orientation/training (provided in an online or virtual environment)
    • Follow guidelines provided in training
    • Work with students in a one-on-one setting for 30-minutes each session, once a week (ideally, the same day and time each week). Sessions may vary according to school.
    • Commit to working with students on a consistent basis

VOLUNTEER FOR LITERACY SUPPORT: Participate in Read Aloud opportunities in virtual, online or face to face sessions.  May be individual students, group, and/or class sessions.

    Responsibilities:

    • Attend a tutor orientation/training (provided in an online or virtual environment)
    • Follow guidelines provided in training
    • No long-term commitment
    • Computer required
