  • About me:

I am Ms. Espinoza, the School Counselor at Cowart Elementary. It is an honor, and a passion of mine, to serve the students and families of Cowart Elementary.  I am a graduate of Duncanville High School and alumni of both Southwestern Assemblies of God University, University of Texas at Arlington, and Dallas Baptist University. After graduating from high school, I pursued a degree in Psychology, earning a bachelor’s degree from SAGU.

    My WHY:

In my Senior year of college, I was enlightened on how mental health impacted our children in schools. That propelled me to continue my education, enrolling into UTA. I completed the Master’s in Social Work program, with additional concentrations in mental health and substance abuse. Throughout the course of my educational endeavors, I worked at an outpatient mental health clinic providing services to an adult population. One life altering revelation was that many of the adult patients had some form of academic, social or emotional deficit that had existed since childhood, however, was never identified, or treated, until they became an adult. Newly aware of this, I was determined to become proactive. I decided to enroll into an alternative teaching program, obtaining several certifications I thought necessary to become a teacher. What better way to address this issue but firsthand!

My first three years in education were as a Kindergarten and First Grade Teacher. I enjoyed my time as a teacher because I had the opportunity to see how students grow academically. As I entered into my fourth year of teaching, I decided to become certified in Special Education, as a result of experiencing the evident “gap” in opportunity for achievement, affecting students both academically and socially for students with additional needs.

In January of 2020, I received my school counseling certification. Although I felt my participation in the classroom was effective, becoming a counselor would allow me to reach all students,  making a greater impact.  Now, every student has access to me and the services I provide. Students can freely discuss their academic, social and emotional challenges. My goal as a counselor is to ensure that every child at Cowart Elementary becomes empowered to regulate their emotions effectively because effective regulation will help to foster the students in becoming productive and emotionally intelligent citizens.
