An education professional on a mission to impact equity and excellence in the world of teaching and learning, Ms. Sakennia C. Reed can best be described as a “servant leader and change maker.” Known to have a passion for closing opportunity gaps and the importance it holds on students’ futures, Sakennia has demonstrated her commitment to the war on educational disparities by serving in several noble leadership roles and positions.
Currently, Sakennia impacts students’ lives as the 7th Grade Instructional Lead Teacher at Ann Richards STEAM Academy in Pleasant Grove. While serving in this realm Sakennia, along with her colleagues, incorporate rich learning opportunities for all students, placing emphasis on STEAM education for Black and Brown scholars through access and representation.
Previously, Sakennia was the 8th Grade English-Language Arts Teacher and Department Chair at “The” Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. There, Sakennia mentored and coached new teachers to the profession, increasing their instructional capacity and student academic scores. From 2018-2020, Sakennia participated in Teach Plus, a program for teachers who want to deepen their knowledge in education policy, engaging directly with key education stakeholders and policy makers, thereby shaping, and advocating for policies that meet the needs of all students. Additionally, Sakennia was a Leadership ISD fellow, she, along with other passionate educators and community stakeholders, ensured that the electorate was informed and ready to act, elevating the effectiveness of school board governance.
Recently, Sakennia received her Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration with a Principal Certification from Lamar University in 2022.
Resilient, visionary, and a warrior for change, Ms. Sakennia C. Reed will continue to advocate for equitable educational opportunities to each and every student.
