    The Music Conservatory at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts has enjoyed decades of providing outstanding music experiences for students. This success has been built upon a strong work ethic and desire to be the eminent high school music program both nationally and internationally.
     

    The Music  department of Booker T. Washington HSPVA is committed to providing our students with the formal instruction that will prepare them to successfully  enter a program of music study at an institution of higher learning.  The music department consists of 7 full time faculty members for 260 music students.

    Our faculty consists of active musicians who perform and maintain a national presence. Fredrick Sanders (Interim Director of the Music Conservatory, Head of Jazz Studies) holds a Bachelors of Music degree from Texas State University in San Marcos, Tx, and has held the piano chair of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra New York City, New York. For over two decades has been nationally and internationally recognized for his accomplishements as a performer, composer, arranger and educator. William George-Twyman (Head of Choral Studies) holds multiple Masters of Music, and is ABD in Choral Conducting from the University of Oklahoma. He has performed internationally as both singer and conductor. Dr. Michael Jacko (Head of Orchestra, AP Music Theory) has served as conductor of the Maryland Sinfonietta and Cover Conductor of the National Gallery of Art Orchestra in Washington DC. He holds advanced degrees in instrumental conducting from Bard College and the University of Maryland. Larry Schnitzer (Head of Winds and Percussion) is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and is a proud alumnus of the Arts Magnet High School at Booker T. Washington. He maintains a busy schedule as a clinician and adjudicator and is affiliated with TMEA and TMAA. Audra Scott (Head of Opera Studies) has a Master of Arts in Music (Composition) from Morgan State University. As a vocalist, she's been made familiar to The Dallas Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, The White House (Obama administration), The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, The Meyerhoff, and numerous other companies and venues in and out of the US. Jasmine Barnes (Vocal Studies) received her BA from Prairie View A&M, her MM from University of Arizona and her Artist Certificate from right here in Dallas at SMU. She has a non-profit that provides music opportunities for students to perform with professional musicians. Leonard Hayes (Head of Piano Studies, AP Music Theory) earned his Master in Music Performance and Literature from Eastman School of Music. Steve Schrag (Guitar Studies) has played in live bands and studio sessions across the nation, and maintains an active performance schedule in addition to teaching.
