Carl Richardson Jr. enters his 17th season as head football coach and his eighth year as athletic coordinator for the Spruce Timberwolves. He previously served as the defensive coordinator for five years from 2003-2008.
In 2014, the Timberwolves returned to the state playoffs for the first time in seven years after Spruce was reconstituted in 2008. The Timberwolves have earned at least 10 district titles and were crowned bi-district champions in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017).
Richardson is a 1990 graduate of Spruce High School. In 1989 and 1990, he earned all-state and all-America honors in football.
He received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Miami, where he was an Associated Press All-American defensive back and was the captain of the team that played for a national championship. He was a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award and selected to the All-Big East Conference Team (1993-94). In 1995, he was drafted by the Houston Oilers, then picked up by the Seattle Seahawks.
In 1998, his professional career ended due to several severe arm injuries. In 2014, his No. 7 Spruce jersey was officially retired.
In 1995, Richardson received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Miami. He has two children who are both Spruce graduates: Krystal graduated from Texas Southern University in 2022, and Carl III, graduated from Texas Christian University in 2019.
