Since leading the Eagles in their inaugural season in Dallas ISD in 2011, Barnett has built a competitive and successful program, guiding the team to a 7-4 record in its first year and securing 13 playoff appearances thereafter.

Barnett began his high school coaching career in 2008 at A. Maceo Smith High School as the athletic coordinator and head football coach. His diverse coaching background includes serving as an assistant football coach at Bushnell Prairie City High School in Illinois, recruiting coordinator at Southern Methodist University (1995-2001), and athletic coordinator at Charles Rice Learning Center (2001-2006).

A Dallas native, Barnett is a proud product of Dallas ISD, having attended Colonial Elementary, Reinhardt Elementary, and W.H. Gaston Middle School. He graduated from Seagoville High School in 1988, where he was a standout in both football and basketball.

Barnett continued his athletic and academic career at Hutchinson Community College (Kansas), earning All-Jayhawk Conference honors. He then transferred to Western Illinois University, where he received All-Gateway Conference recognition in football while completing both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sports administration.

Coach Barnett and his wife, Edith, are the proud parents of two sons: Elzie Barnett Jr. and Elzie Barnett III.
