September Attendance Awareness Month

September is Attendance Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of consistent school attendance and increase awareness of how absenteeism can affect students’ academic achievement and long-term success.

Regular school attendance is essential to academic success. However, students, families, and schools may not realize how quickly absences—whether excused or unexcused—can add up and create challenges in the classroom. Chronic absence, commonly defined as missing 10% of the school year, or about 18 days, can have a significant impact on a student’s progress. Students who miss too much school may struggle to develop critical reading skills in the early grades, fall behind or fail courses in middle school, and face an increased risk of not graduating from high school.

Every school day matters. By working together to encourage consistent attendance and address barriers that keep students from school, families, educators, and communities can help ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
