FERPA - Notice of Release of Information

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, requires that Dallas Independent School District, with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s education records. 

According to Dallas ISD Board Policy FL (LOCAL) the District has designated the following categories of information as directory information: student name, address, telephone listing, photograph, place of birth, honors and awards received, dates of attendance, grade level, enrollment status, most recent educational institution attended, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, and weight and height of members of athletic teams.

The District shall only release directory information with parent, legal guardian, or student over the age of 18 consent:

1. To military recruiters and institutions of higher education, as required by law under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), the District shall provide, on a request made by a military recruiter or an institution of higher education, secondary school students' names, addresses and telephone listings unless a student's parent has opted-out of such disclosures;
2. For school/District sponsored purposes as defined for purposes of this policy, "school/District sponsored purposes" shall include, but not limited to, all official District and campus publications, including yearbooks, newsletters, directories, graduation-related documents as well as announcements related to school/District activities, honors and awards; and
3. For all other purposes, including third-party requesters, directory information shall include student's name only.

Annually parents/legal guardians or students age 18 or older will either consent to release of directory information or deny release of directory information during the registration process.
