1. Differentiated AI Tool Access: 
   Within Dallas ISD, access to specific AI tools is based on grade level. While AI mode in Google Search is available to all students (K-12), Gemini and NotebookLM are currently restricted to students in grades 9-12. 
2. AI as a "Thought Partner" for Inquiry: 
   We need to move beyond using AI to simply find facts, which often leads to the "good enough trap" where students accept the first answer without verification. Instead, AI should be used as a "thought partner" to bridge the gap between traditional research and inquiry. This includes using it to brainstorm research topics, develop complex questions, and synthesize information across multiple sources.
3. Multimodal Synthesis with Canvas and Studio: 
   A key feature of these AI tools is the ability to transform researched information into different formats using Canvas (in AI mode and Gemini) or Studio (in NotebookLM). Users can generate interactive flashcards, infographics, mind maps, and even audio overviews in various languages to help digest and interact with information.

1. Ensure you are signed in with your DISD credentials, and the security shield is visible in the prompt box to ensure your data is safe and covered by the district's privacy agreement with Google.
2. The more details you include in your prompt, the better your output will be.
3. Gems are customized versions of Gemini that you can create with specific instructions to act like an expert on a certain topic or follow guidelines every time you use it. 
4. Gemini Pro licenses afford access to Gemini directly in Google applications such as Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Forms.

• Dallas ISD has an AI website, dallasisd.org/ai, that has tools and resources for students, educators, and families including our Dallas ISD AI Handbook. 
• Students in grades 9-12 have access to Google Gemini and NotebookLM. If they cannot access it through their waffle, they can go directly to the website. Gemini.google.com or NotebookLM.google.com. 
• Students in grades K-8 will be redirected to the Google search page if they try to access Gemini, ChatGPT, or CoPilot.
• 9-12 students can use the Guided Learning tool as a personal tutor. It guides their learning and thinking instead of simply providing answers. 
• 9-12 students can use the Canvas tool to create flashcards, simulations, quizzes, and infographics.
• NotebookLM only uses the resources you upload to analyze data or create learning materials. 
• 9-12 students can use NotebookLm to organize notes and class materials to help them study. They can generate videos, audio overviews/podcasts, quizzes, flashcards, mind maps, and more.
