Project R.E.A.D.
Dallas ISD's Library Redesign Initiative
Project READ is Dallas ISD's library redesign initiative. This redesign incorporates 4 different zones (Research, Exploration, Application, and Design) that utilize the library space to expand students' interests into the arts and design, deepen their knowledge of coding, hone their speaking and presentation skills using digital broadcasts, or increase their critical thinking skills through research and collaboration.
Project READ is NOT replacing libraries, but rather enhancing the services and experiences offered. Storytime, information literacy skills, book fairs, reading events, and library as you know, and love is NOT going away!

General FAQ
Q: Why is my scanner not scanning?
A: The scanner must often be resynced with the computer you are using. In many cases, unplugging and replugging the scanner from the computer will reset it to the device. There are rare instances where the scanner needs to be reprogrammed. Please see the equipment folder under the Librarian Sign-In. Please follow the path, LMS website> Librarian Sign-In> Equipment. Pick your corresponding scanner folder, and the programming instructions will be listed. If you have any questions, please contact your LMS technician.
Q: Why is my scanner not charging?
A: Depending on the scanner, a scanner that is not scanning could be a base problem, a pin issue, or an internal battery. If you have a scanner with a separate base with bronze or golden pins, make sure that the scanner sits tightly on the base. If the scanner sits well, rub a pencil eraser on the pins. The eraser has been known to clean any debris or gunk on the pins. If you have a wired scanner, try unplugging the scanner and plugging the scanner into another port. If you have tried these fixes and your scanner is still not working, please contact your LMS technician.
Q: Does LMS provide a new scanner if the scanner at the school breaks?
A: No, Library Services does not replace the scanner if it malfunctions or breaks. You will need to request one from your campus to be purchased. We encourage you to buy one of the following models (Honeywell 1400GD, Honeywell 1472G).
Q: What happens if my library icons are missing from my desktop? Can I reinstall them myself?
A: If the desktop icons for LS2 Staff, inventory, and reports are missing, have disappeared, or are not installed due to a new computer, they are available on the software center or self-service. However, you cannot install them as they are restricted to admin users. You must contact your LMS technician to schedule a time to install them.
Q: If there is any technical issue in the library, do I need to submit a ticket?
A: You should submit a ticket as you typically do for other tech issues. Once you submit the ticket, contact your LMS technician with the ticket number so we may assign it to Library Services.
Q: Can Library Services furnish my library with additional or updated computers?
A: Regrettably, Library Services cannot provide or acquire new computers for the library. While libraries may choose multiple circulation computers, it is not mandatory. Should your computer experience technical difficulties or malfunctions, please notify Jesse or Mark via email detailing the issue. If you submit a support ticket, kindly include the ticket number in the email's subject line, along with a description of the problem.
Makerbot 3D Printer
Q: Do I need an account for my Makerbot Sketch 3D printer?
A: Yes, you must set up a cloud account to activate the Makerbot Sketch. To create an account, click the following link: Makerbot login . When you arrive at the sign-in page, please click where it says “Sign Up” and then click "Sign Up with Google." Makerbot uses Single Sign On (SSO) to authenticate and create an account.
Q: Can 3D devices overheat?
A: The 3D printer can overheat, but it is uncommon. The Sketch 3D printer has no internal fan to bring cold air into the device. The Sketch only has an exhaust to remove the hot air the device produces inside while a print is being made. Overusing the printer without downtime can cause the internal temperature to rise or cause the extruder to overheat. The outside temperature can also be a factor in the device's overheating. When the room where the 3D printer is used is hot, the device's internal temperature can increase. When combining the internal printer temperature and the ambient or surrounding outside temperature, the 3D printer system may recommend a failure code that states a maximum temperature has been reached and that the machine should be shut down. Setting up the printer in a cool or well-ventilated place is crucial to prevent overheating.
Q: Can you use filament that is not from MakerBot?
A: The short answer is YES. However, you want to ensure that you use a filament size with the exact dimensions of the standard size that Sketch comes with. The standard size for the MakerBot sketch is 1.75mm, and you should stick with the recommended size. However, when purchasing 3rd party filament, you may need help seating the spool on the handle. Even though the PLA filament will pass through the motor and into the tubing, the spool hole may be smaller or larger than the Sketch can hold. Rest assured, you can contact other librarians who have the Sketch and purchased after-market filaments to see how they are holding the spool in place.
Q: Do I have to clean my Sketch 3D printer?
A: You should clean your 3D printer whenever possible or after 100 prints. The cleaning process is relatively easy. Compressed air can help eliminate any excess filament particles left on the inside of the device and any dust particles or dust bunnies that may have accumulated in the device. Replace the build plate with one of the others that the bundle came with so you do not use the same build plate repeatedly. Again, this is recommended after about 100 prints. You do not have to do anything with the nozzle or extruder unless there is an issue causing the filament to jam or not come out correctly. Maintaining your 3D printer is a straightforward process that ensures its longevity and performance.
Q: Does my 3D printer have a warranty?
A: The 3D printer comes with a one-year warranty that MakerBot covers. The warranty may cover nozzle failure, motor failure, battery failure (Power), and LCD screen failure. The warranty does not cover the consumable part of the extruder. However, every case is on a base-by-base basis. You will have to reach out to MakerBot to submit an incident, and you will be emailed a ticket number.
Cricut & Sawgrass Sublimation Printer
Q: I have a Sawgrass printer and A Cricut machine; now what?
A: If you received a Sawgrass Sublimation printer and a Cricut machine, you must download two desktop apps and set up two separate accounts to ensure those devices run correctly. The first account you will need to set up is a Cricut account. You must then download the Cricut Design Space from the Cricut website. The links have been added. You must set up an account for the Sawgrass SG500 Sublimation printer. Click on the SawGrass account setup link to register for an account. Once the account is set up, download the Printmate software from the software menu. Please select your Operating system. You will be able to choose between Windows OS and Apple IOS. If your computer requests administrative access to make changes or install software, please contact your Library Services technician (Jesse, Mark) or Library Services.
Q: Why is my Sawgrass Printer not printing correctly?
A: If your printer does not print or gives you an error message, then there is a chance that the ink for the printer has run down or out. If you are still using the ink with the printer, please know that those ink cartridges are just a starter pack.
Q: What if my laptop does not recognize my Sawgrass printer or Cricut machines?
A: LMS knows that a particular laptop will not recognize the Sawgrass or Cricut machines. Library Services has discovered that the Sawgrass and Cricut machines need help connecting with the Thinkpad Lenovo Yoga 13w. If you have been issued one of these devices, you can still use it. However, you must use a USB-C adapter and run the machines through the USB hub to work. You should use a standard PC desktop for these devices if available.
Q: Does the paper that comes with the Sawgrass printer need to be installed in a particular way?
A: Yes, the paper that comes with the printer has matte and glossy sides. The shiny side should be facing up in the printer tray. It may be difficult to tell, but if you put a light source on the paper, it makes it easier to tell one side from the other.
Tello Drone
Q: What is the flight time of my Tello drones?
A: The Tello drones' standard flight time is about 10 minutes max, using a regular flight pattern and speed. The flight time can be dramatically reduced to 5-7 minutes if the drone is performing stunts or flying at a high rate of speed.
Q: How long does the Tello drone's battery take to charge?
A: 3 hours per battery.
Q: Is the Tello drone application available on the student's ChromeBooks?
A: No, the application to fly the drones is only available through self-service on iPads.
Merge Cubes & HUE Animation
Q: Do the Merge cubes work on devices other than the iPads?
A: Currently, iPads are the only devices available for use on the Merge Cubes. LMS is working on getting the Merge Cube application on ChromeBooks, but that system is currently unavailable.
Q: Do I need to set up a Hue animation account if I didn’t get the kit as part of my package?
A: No, you do not need to set up an account with Hue Animation if you did not receive the complete kit. You can still download the Stop Motion application for Self-Service on iPads. Be aware that you will be limited in what you can do with the application.
