The Property and Evidence Division plays a critical role in supporting the Dallas ISD Police Department by ensuring the proper collection, documentation, storage, security, and disposition of property and evidence associated with police investigations and daily operations.
Through strict accountability measures and established evidence management procedures, the division helps maintain the integrity of investigative materials while supporting officers, detectives, prosecutors, and the judicial process.
What We Do
The Property and Evidence Division is responsible for:
- Receiving, documenting, and securing property and evidence collected by department personnel.
- Maintaining accurate records for all items submitted into department custody.
- Preserving evidence integrity through proper storage, handling, and chain-of-custody procedures.
- Safeguarding items associated with criminal investigations and administrative cases.
- Coordinating the release of property to authorized individuals in accordance with applicable laws and department policies.
- Managing the retention and disposition of evidence according to legal requirements and established procedures.
- Supporting investigators and officers by ensuring timely access to properly maintained evidence.
- Assisting with audits, inspections, and accountability processes to ensure compliance with departmental standards.
Maintaining the Chain of Custody
The preservation of evidence is essential to successful investigations and fair outcomes. Property and Evidence personnel maintain detailed documentation throughout the entire evidence lifecycle, ensuring every item is properly accounted for from initial submission through final disposition.
