Claiming Property

The Dallas ISD Police Department Property & Evidence Unit is responsible for the secure custody and management of property and evidence collected or received by the department.

Types of Property
Evidence
Items collected as evidence are held by the Dallas ISD Police Department until the associated case has been fully resolved for all parties.
Evidence cannot be released until the appropriate case and evidence requirements have been satisfied.
Safekeeping Property
Property may be placed into safekeeping when it is secured by the department with the intent of returning it to its rightful owner.
For example, if an individual experiences a medical emergency while riding a bicycle and is transported to a hospital by ambulance, officers may secure the bicycle in the Property & Evidence Unit for safekeeping.
Officer authorization is required before safekeeping property can be released.
Unclaimed safekeeping property may be disposed of after 90 days.
Found Property
Found property with no known owner may be disposed of after 30 days.
If the owner of found property can be identified, the owner will be notified by certified mail. If the property remains unclaimed, it may be disposed of 90 days from the date of the certified letter.

Claiming Your Firearm
Additional requirements apply when claiming a firearm from the Dallas ISD Police Department Property & Evidence Unit.
Individuals seeking the release of a firearm should be prepared to provide:
- Proof of lawful ownership.
- A valid government-issued photo ID.
- The associated case number.
- A criminal background check.
- Any other documentation required for the release.

Firearm Possession Restrictions
Certain individuals are prohibited from possessing firearms. The Property & Evidence Unit identifies the following circumstances that may prohibit firearm possession:
- Conviction of a felony or a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.
- Being a fugitive from justice.
- Being an unlawful user of or addicted to controlled substances.
- Having been adjudicated mentally defective or committed to a mental institution.
- Receiving a dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces.
- Being subject to certain restraining or protective orders involving a child or intimate partner.
- Having been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.
- Having renounced U.S. citizenship.
- Being illegally or unlawfully in the United States.
- Being under indictment for a felony or a crime punishable by more than one year in prison.
- Being a member of a criminal street gang with a gun on their person inside a vehicle or watercraft.

Claiming Property for Someone Else
Property will not be released to another person unless the lawful property owner provides a notarized letter authorizing that individual to receive the property on the owner's behalf.
The notarized letter must be from the lawful property owner and must state that the designated individual is authorized to receive the property.
