TEA's Commitment to School Safety
The TEA emphasizes that keeping Texas students, educators, and staff safe is a shared responsibility. The agency supports districts through funding, technical assistance, and policy guidance to ensure schools are secure, responsive, and prepared for emergencies
Key Legislative Updates (89th Session)
Recent legislation has significantly expanded school safety requirements:
House Bill 2: Increases the School Safety Allotment to $21.10 per ADA and $33,540 per eligible campus. Requires timely threat notifications to all staff
House Bill 6: Mandates reporting of serious student threats and behaviors. Requires inclusion of disability experts in threat assessments for special education students
House Bill 33: Requires standardized emergency response terminology and security reviews for new or renovated facilities
Senate Bill 838: Requires silent panic alert technology in every classroom by the 2025–2026 school year
TEA’s Office of School Safety and Security provides on-site assessments, webinars, and guidance documents to help districts implement best practices
