Family Tips

⏰ 1. Create Consistent Routines

  • Establish regular morning and evening routines before school begins.

  • Use visual schedules, checklists, or timers to support smooth transitions.

  • Review the day ahead with your child to reduce anxiety and build confidence.

❤️ 2. Strengthen Positive Character Skills

  • Practice character traits like kindness, empathy, courage, and responsibility at home.

  • Role-play common school situations (asking for help, working with others).

  • Acknowledge and celebrate positive choices and effort.

  • Model problem-solving and positive self-talk.

😊 3. Support Emotional Awareness

  • Help your child identify and name their feelings (happy, worried, frustrated, excited).

  • Use tools such as emotion charts, journals, or drawings.

  • Practice calming strategies like deep breathing or taking breaks in a quiet space.

📚 4. Reinforce School Expectations at Home

  • Learn your school’s behavior expectations (e.g., Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible).

  • Use the same language at home to promote consistency.

  • Praise progress, effort, and growth—not just outcomes.

🤝 5. Partner Early with Your IEP Team

  • Look for communication from your child’s Case Manager early in the school year.

  • Share strategies that work well at home or updates from the summer.

  • Keep important documents organized in a family binder.

  • Attend Special Education learning events to build advocacy skills.

⭐ 6. Celebrate Strengths and Successes

  • Focus on what your child does well, such as creativity, persistence, or teamwork.

  • Use strengths-based language when talking about school.

  • Create a space at home to display achievements, artwork, or goals.
