The Urban Specialists provide intentionally focused support in the following areas:

Academic Achievement

Provide Case Management for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Students identified by school administrators that need ongoing support to experience academic and social success

  • Confer with teacher and parents regarding students’ academic challenges
  • Confer with parent regarding student’s academic challenges
  • Monitor progress of students
  • Assist in the formulation of a plan of action to address academic challenges via interventions, tutoring and remediation

Attendance

Work with school Registrar and Administrative representative to monitor school attendance as well as identify students with attendance issues with intentional focus on students in caseload.

  • Review attendance data weekly of caseload students
  • Provide/File monthly print-out for every campus served (first of every month)
  • Promote Attendance Improvement and Truancy Reduction initiatives
  • Discuss attendance with student and parents
  • Document both student and parent conversation/ communication
  • Confirm student address and working phone numbers
  • Conduct home visits

 Parental Invovlement

Actively seek opportunities to involve and inform caseload parents of school and community related activities that will support school initiatives, promote academic achievement and provide opportunities for family empowerment

  • Build positive relationship with caseload parent/guardians
  • Support Parent Engagement opportunities on campus by providing workshops, facilitation, speakers, volunteerism, PTA support, and SBDM support
  • Complete parent/ guardian questionnaire for each student on caseload
  • Parent Portal
  • Serve as resource for parents
  • Assist parents with effective communication with staff
  • Seek out parents with leadership abilities
  • Involve parent in school and community related activities
  • Assist parents with short term and long term goals
  • Periodic home visits during Fall / Spring

Reduce Referrals

  • Review school data monthly
  • Work with administration to decrease number of occurrences of issues reflected from data
  • Identify Tier 2 and Tier 3 repeat offenders
  • Provide caseload management for identified Tier 2 and Tier 3 students
  • Work with teachers and students to monitor and support required interventions
  • Home visits
  • Support Groups
  • Mentoring
  • Tutoring

School Climate

Improve school climate by providing additional partnerships and resources to cultivate an environment conducive for learning for all

Urban Specialists will work to provide summer learning programming for identified schools. Specialists will partner with DISD and existing agencies to provide a quality summer learning experience that will improve academic and social outcomes to prevent summer learning loss
