  • Statement regarding gas odor - Aug. 24

Posted by Dallas ISD News & Information on 8/24/2016

Atmos Energy has been working with South Oak Cliff High School to resolve a report of a gas smell at the school. Atmos Energy cleared the boiler line, which provides needed service to both the cafeteria and health services, and, out of an abundance of caution, wanted follow up tests for other gas lines. Atmos Energy planned to cap the other gas lines but, unfortunately, turned on all gas lines. This resulted in a gas smell that prompted the evacuation of the school at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Atmos Energy corrected this and turned off all gas lines and students returned to the building. Atmos Energy turned the boiler line back on at 6 p.m., and the school will be operational for tomorrow.

  • Letter to community - Update on water quality

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

As part of our continued partnership, we want to address some concerns in the South Oak Cliff High School community regarding water quality at the campus.

This spring, Dallas ISD commissioned an outside firm, EFI Global, to conduct a water quality review at South Oak Cliff High. Results of the review found the water is safe to consume and use.

Specifically, there were some chemicals identified in the water above recommended levels, but the concentrations were below levels determined “actionable” by U.S. Environmental Protection agency. This means that while the water did contain minimal levels of certain chemicals, the concentrations of those chemicals were not high enough to warrant a mandatory action or represent an immediate health concern for consumers.

After receiving the report, Dallas ISD learned that EFI Global inadvertently misstated the level bromate found in the water. Bromate is a by-product formed when drinking water is disinfected to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. The report has been corrected and may be obtained through an open records request. Dallas ISD has also begun of review of any corrective steps that may be required, and it is working with the City of Dallas as needed.

As always, Dallas ISD is committed to maintaining a healthy environment for students and staff. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 214-932-7000.

  • Update on termite remediation - April 1, 2016

Posted by Dallas ISD News & Information on 3/31/2016

The following is a statement regarding the remediation of termites found on March 31, 2016.

Today, Dallas ISD Environmental Services personnel responded to a report of termites in the nurses office at South Oak Cliff HS. At approximately 11 a.m., Dallas ISD staff members located termites on a column in the area, and proceeded to inject the column with foam treatment to kill the termites. It is expected the termites will be eradicated, and the Environmental Services will visit the school on Friday, April 1 to determine if additional steps are needed.

    UPDATE - APRIL 1, 2016

Dallas ISD Environmental Services personnel visted the campus today to complete remediation efforts. The school administration was also advised that a more extensive remediation that includes working unground near the foundation is needed, but will have to take place after the school year because such work would be disruptive to the learning environment. In the meantime, the district will continue to monitor the campus and remediate any termite presence.

  • Statement on condition of campus - 3/22/2016

Posted by Dallas ISD News and Information on 3/23/2016

The following is a statement from Dallas ISD reagrding commentary from community members and photos of the condition at South Oak Cliff high School in Monday, March 21, 2016:

"We are aware of the photos taken inside of South Oak Cliff High School on Monday being circulated. We are disappointed because the condition of the campus when students returned was simply not good enough. While performing important updates and improvements during Spring Break, the final clean up did not meet the expectation of the Dallas Independent School District or community. We are taking immediate steps to prevent this condition in the future."

  • Letter to parents - communications updates

Posted by Dallas ISD News & Information on 2/25/2016 6:00:00 PM

As part of our continued partnership, we want to update you about facilities maintenance and improvements here at South Oak Cliff High School.

In recent weeks, Dallas ISD has taken a series of steps to address the concerns of students, staff and the community regarding the learning environment at our school. Moving forward, we will provide several avenues for you to access information about this work and to share your input and thoughts. Those steps include:

    • Launching a dedicated space on the school website that will be updated regularly with updates. This launch is planned for Friday, Feb. 26. This will include an updated list of completed facilities projects and the projected timeline for planned work.

    • Creating a two-way blog on the school website. This launch is planned for Friday, Feb. 26. You will also have an opportunity to submit questions with responses to be submitted by Dallas ISD staff members.

    • Planning of future meetings to allow for public input on campus improvements moving forward. Visit the school website regularly for updates.

Dallas ISD facilities maintenance staff continues to visit the building daily in an effort to adjust the new heating and cooling system that was recently installed. We are aware that some areas of the campus are warmer than normal, including the cafeteria. We are working diligently to correct these inconsistencies, with a goal of completing these efforts by the end of the month.

Thank you for your continued support of South Oak Cliff High School. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call my office at 972-932-7000.
