    Creative inspiration, student engagement, and artistic energy flow from the classroom of master artist and educator Yolanda Burton; a Dallas local and proud graduate of Dallas Independent School District. She received a bachelors of science, in education from Paul Quinn College, and a masters of liberal arts from Dallas Baptist University.  She is a self-taught artist whose themes explore social-emotional realism, mental health awareness and self-actualization. As a multidisciplinary artist she creates visual compositions, including paintings, murals, and sculptural works. Her portfolio also includes poetry, plays, installations, music, songs, and performance.  Movement and spiritual release are key themes in her expression.

     I have always found the human condition intriguing.  We are fluid and have branches.  Using our branches, we continue to move throughout the gift of life.  Just like a tree, or a river, our existence is intricately woven together. My artwork embodies the observations and consequences of humanity.

    Yolanda Burton's leadership has had a significant impact on other educators throughout Texas.  Her most widely requested workshops, "Urban Solutions,"  were created in collaboration with two other urban educational professionals.  This series of workshops engage teachers in activities and content designed to develop, refresh, or broaden their knowledge of classroom management strategies, that foster rigor and student buy-in within the urban classroom setting. She is an active professional artist, and art thought leader dedicated to the promotion of rich artistic opportunities for all. Throughout her 29 years of educational leadership, she has launched, reinvented, and invigorated multiple art programs; serving as department chair, assessment and curriculum writer, mentor, and program developer for public, charter, and private schools as well as the community at large.  She is excited to bring her inspiring educational energy and dedication to the brilliant scholars of David W. Carter High School.
