We have a new picture book library of great books with important messages and beautiful art.
If you have not begun reading during breakfast time or just as class begins, please let me know and I will bring you some books.
Give it a try; you will love what a 10-minute investment does to the atmosphere of your class and the minds of your students.
We just got this book in the library: every one of our students could benefit from this story!
Those Shoes. This book deals well with the topic of poverty and the importance of putting others' needs ahead of our own wants. Jeremy wants the latest pair of trendy shoes. All his friends have them but his grandmother can't afford to buy him a pair. I like that she never shamed him for wanting what he couldn't have. Jeremy finds a pair at a thrift store and buys them even though they are too small. When he makes friends with a kid at school who needs them more than he does, he gives them to him. I love how this book is honest about the struggles Jeremy has about giving the shoes away. He really wants to keep them for himself but in the end does the right thing on his own. Jeremy feels embarrassed about the shoes he does have to wear and that doesn't disappear, making the act of kindness even more powerful.
Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. THE HATE U GIVE is based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr.

Running. That's all Ghost (real name Castle Cranshaw) has ever known. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons—it all started with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems—and running away from them—until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who sees something in Ghost: crazy natural talent. If Ghost can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. Can Ghost harness his raw talent for speed, or will his past finally catch up to him?
