    Ready for 1st grade? Your child should be able to…

    • Tie their shoes

    • Can retell a simple story

      • Tip: Ask your child questions during storytime. Who are the main characters? What is the problem? How does it get solved? Where is the setting? After the story ask your child what the story was about-what happened?

    • Recognize all letter and sounds of the alphabet

    • Can identify the setting, plot, characters, and conflict of a story

      • Tip: Ask your child questions while reading a fictional story.

    • Identify basic sight words

      • Sight Word List : Use the list to create flash cards, make it fun by having your child write the word in sand, paint, chalk, or mud, etc. 

    • Names and write numbers 0-100

    • Knows the days of the week and months of the year

    • Knows the value of a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and can identify each coin

      • Tip: Play store with your child using real coins, play coins, or coins made out of paper.
