NAF
  • South Oak Cliff High School Distinguished NAF Academy of Engineering is making a point to deliver a comprehensive learning environment for students to transform their thinking from the impossible to innovation. Engineering is the foundation of everything that we use today. It involves critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, problem-solving, and leadership skills to design and develop a product or service that is beneficial to the local, state, national, and global community. We are teaching our students about the different types of engineering that align with colleges, universities, and careers such as mechanical, computer science, cybersecurity, and data science. In addition, we feel it is important that we expose students to all the various types of engineering they can choose to study in college. We are passionate about student voice and choice and feel that for them to make a choice they need to see all options that are available. Most times, when we discourse about the different types of engineering, students discover engineering from a totally different perspective than they once thought. As educators, we really want them to believe that no matter what our current circumstance is, we can always improve when we are proactive.

We want our students to know that if they believe in themselves and take the time to develop the necessary soft skills, the places they will go are exponential. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People skills provide needed soft skills in life and in the workplace. This year, we have intentionally embedded the 7 Habits throughout the year into lessons to help students make the connection to being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand before being understood, synergizing, and taking time to sharpen the saw. We have noticed that the taxonomy of these 7 Habits is becoming autonomous and are looking forward to seeing the places our students will go as they learn and internalize the foundation of the engineering mindset and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Our curriculum for engineering is from Project Lead the Way, Inc.  The course of sequence for our Engineering Program is below.

    • 9th - Introduction to Engineering Design
    • 10th-  AP Computer Science Principles
    • 11th - Principles of Engineering
    • 12th - Engineering Design & Development

In addition, we have a Robotics Club sponsored by Mr. Rollerson.
