    Readers Are Leaders

Readers Are Leaders is a Dallas ISD reading program designed to promote reading for pleasure. Brochures detailing the Readers Are Leaders program can be found in the library or you can see it here.
Kindergarten, first, and second grade classes participate as a whole group, reading books during class and tracking the number of books read together. The students enjoy reading texts together and build a bond through these shared stories. Our hope is that each class becomes a community of readers.

    Beary Special Readers

Beary Special Readers is a longstanding Lakewood tradition. This program celebrates reading and encourages families to read together. Kindergarten, first, and second graders may participate in this program. Students who read five books (or share five books) with a friend or family member can complete their reader slip and bring it to the library. Readers slips are put into the Beary Special mailbox on Mrs. Pattillo's desk. Each morning students names will be randomly selected from the mailbox and announced to come borrow a bear from the library. Beary Special Reader slips are available here or in the library.

    Texas Bluebonnet Program

All third, fourth, and fifth graders participate in the Texas Bluebonnet program from August to January each year. Students read at least five of the twenty nominated books, rate them, and cast a vote for their favorite. We will vote in the library at the end of January. This program is a wonderful way to discover new books and authors. It also encourages pleasure reading and plants a seed for our students to become life-long readers. All books are available in our school library; however, students may read them from other places as well (home, classroom library, public library, ebooks). More information about the Texas Bluebonnet program can be found on the Texas Library Association website here.
