Handy named DMN Defensive Player of the Week.
Wilmer-Hutchins LB Lorenz Handy
What he did: As goes Handy, so do the Eagles. With a chance to lock down the No. 3 seed in a competitive District 8-4A Division I, Wilmer-Hutchins’ defense got a spark from its senior linebacker. Handy picked off Hillcrest’ quarterback three times and piled up 17 tackles — somehow a notch down from a ridiculous outing earlier this season in which Handy logged 27 tackles.
The most crucial of the takeaways came near the start of the fourth quarter. Handy snagged a Hillcrest pass on 4th-and-7, bringing the ball back about 15 yards and setting up the Eagles with a short field. They’d go on to score their final touchdown of the night and hang on for the win with a 38-22 lead at that point.
The stats: 17 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 pass break-ups and 3 interceptions.
