About Ernie Banks:
Mr. Ernie Banks graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Dallas, TX in 1950. Ernest Banks nicknamed "Mr. Cub" and "Mr. Sunshine", was an American professional baseball player who starred in Major League Baseball as a shortstop and first baseman for the Chicago Cubs between 1953 and 1971. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977 and was named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in 1999. Banks is regarded by some as one of the greatest players of all time. Mr. Banks received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 2013 for his contributions in Baseball. Banks finished his career with 512 home runs; his 277 home runs as a shortstop were a career record at the time of his retirement.
About the Artist:
Local artist/sculptor Emmanuel Gillespie has been selected to create the Ernie Banks Memorial Sculpture. He was born and raised in Dallas and is a 1985 graduate of the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he majored in visual arts. He continued his formal education at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas (B.F.A. Magna Cum Laude) and at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pennsylvania (M.A. Magna Cum Laude). Gillespie works with mixed media in both 2D and 3D form. Over the past 20+ years, Gillespie has worked as an Art Instructor at the Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Young Audiences of Greater Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs - City of Dallas, St. Philips School and Community Center, South Dallas Cultural Center and The Winston School.
