Partner Spotlight: Nora O'Garro

Students at SMU

Nora O’Garro is a passionate “Event Planner” and the CEO and Owner of UnameIt Event Planning. She currently serves as Past Western Region President, National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). She is the Founder and Director of the Dallas Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP) held annually on the campus of Southern Methodist University (19 years running). Nora’s desire to start ACAP through the DFW Professional Chapter of NABA rose from a desire to help minority high school students, especially in Dallas ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE), to reach their potential through a career in accounting and related fields.

"The profession is underrepresented and on a national level less than 10% are represented by minorities. I know firsthand the lack of support and opportunities of career investigation in a particular field can limit a person's pursuit of higher education, especially in accounting. I wanted to be the change I wanted to see. I learned very early I was not defined by my circumstance but my attitude in it. We (the DFW ACAP Executive Director, ACAP BOD, DFW Professional NABA Chapter, Corporate Partners, family and Circle of Influencers) have been able to graduate almost 900 students from ACAP over the last 19 years. The majority of these students have obtained their degrees and over 20% of them are in the accounting and its related business fields. We are very proud of our success!" - Nora O'Garro
