8th grade Parents, Key Supporters in the Community Project!

A key component of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is the Community Project. Through this self-initiated and self-directed learning process students will develop more in-depth knowledge and insights of an issue or community need that interests them. Community Projects allow students to propose, develop, and complete a challenging service project and provides them an opportunity to develop their creative thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills. In May, students will present the results and reflections on this service project at a Project Showcase evening.

What is the goal of the Community Project?

  • participate in an extended inquiry of an issue or community need
  • develop creative new insights and deeper understandings of that issue or need
  • communicate effectively in a variety of situations
  • propose and complete a challenging service as a result of learning
  • appreciate the process of learning and take pride in his or her accomplishments

Parents are key supporters and advocates in this process. Parents:

  • help their scholar identify community needs and personal passions/talents/concerns as a foundation of the project;
  • provide support in the evenings and weekends, especially as the child takes action;
  • ensure timeline milestones are being met; and
  • attend the Spring presentation showcase and invite other supporters.
