YWISE

A tremendous round of applause is in order for the Science and Engineering Magnet (SEM) school, the Premier STEM Destination, for achieving an outstanding sweep at the YWISE competition. In an extraordinary display of talent and dedication, SEM claimed all three top spots—1st, 2nd, and 3rd place! We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our amazing students and the committed Mr. Gonzalez for their hard work and perseverance. The event took place at UT Dallas on April 22, 2023, marking a proud moment for our school and a testament to our students. The entire SEM community celebrates this triple win and looks forward to continued success in the future.

Building safety and security - reminder for students
(8/3/22; 8/16/22; 8/30/22; 9/1/22; 9/12/22; 9/20/22)

Safety and security have always been a priority and our No. 1 goal. I am writing to reiterate:
  • All exterior doors will remain locked at all times - before, during, and after school. If you see a door that's not locked, pull it to close. Say something - tell the nearest adult, teacher, your administrator - if you see an issue with an exterior door not being locked after closing it.
  • Townview Magnet Center is a closed campus. Students are not allowed to briefly step outside, i.e. to make a call, pick up delivered food. There are no exceptions.
  • Do not prop the exterior doors open for any reason.
  • Do not open the door for outside visitors for any reason. Visitors should go to the front of the school.
  • Principal Letter 08-03-2022

Safety and Procedures

  • Safety is our number one priority. Click the link for more information regarding mesh or clear bags. Future information will include entrance and exit (drop off/pick up) protocols, and other enhancements to our security procedures. I am asking all of you for your support as we re-envision our image of a safe school. Safety will sometimes have to come before convenience, and exceptions cannot be made. Procedures and routines are part of what will keep us all safe.

Say Something App

  • Part of safety is giving everyone the opportunity to report signs of potential violence or self-harm. The District has worked with the non-profit “Sandy Hook Promise” to provide the “Say Something” program. This will allow students and faculty to anonymously share safety concerns. Please remind your students that it is more important to be a friend than to keep a friend and that getting help for people in danger of violence or self-harm is always the right thing to do. For more details, see the district’s information page.

Wear your student ID Badge at all times

  • All students will be issued a student ID badge during the first weeks of school. Once issued, badges must be worn at all times.
  • Hallway control is an important part of safety. All students will be required to have a pass to be in the hallway during class; passes will not be issued during the first and last 10 minutes of class.

Campus Wide Grading Policy

The SEM 2022-2023 grading policy will be the same across the board for all double-blocked classes, including Freshman Calculus and Freshman English.

● Regarding double-blocked classes and throughout the 9-week grading cycle, grades are recorded only in the A day section.

● At the end of the quarter, the teacher will enter a single grade in the B day section, mirroring the A day grade.

● For the semester final, if the teacher gives two separate finals for each set of content (like, a Semester 1 content final and a semester 2 content final), the final exam grades may be different based on that. If the teacher gives a single, cumulative final, then the grade should be the same in both.

Just as a friendly reminder. The clinic does not and will not be testing for covid this year.
  1. If you need a test
    1. TEA has funded DISD for covid-19 testing sites throughout the district.  They do change, so please refer to this website for more details
    2.  https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/74200

Every student is to do “self-monitoring”. If they wake up, feel sick or having symptoms of Covid, they are supposed to test to be sure they are not coming to school sick with Covid. They can go to one of the district sites, do a home test, go to their doctor, go to a pharmacy. Wearing a mask is the suggested thing to do.

In advance, thank you

School Safety Drills

English

Good Morning Townview Parents,

Every year as part of our safety protocol, the school participates in various drills:  weather, fire, lockdown, evacuation, etc.  We are required to conduct these drills periodically so that we can ensure that we are prepared.  Today we conducted our first lockdown drill and it went well.  The procedure is to close and lock all doors until the all clear is sounded.

Townview Administrative Team

Espanol

Here are some additional details about the upcoming tardy system plans:

  • Each school will have a Tardy Tank near their main office. Students will be sent to their office to scan their badges and obtain a tardy pass. SEM will use the eCampus software at their Tardy Tank site where students will scan their badges, a pass will print out, and students will report to class.
  • eCampus is expected to do automatic calls home when student sign in, it keeps track of the student tardy data, and it automatically assigns disciplinary actions that the Townview disciplinary committee programs. We are looking to roll out the system within the next week or so.

Memo 08-18-2022

From Townview School Nurse, Stephanie Dodds, BSN, RN
Clinic Rules
  1. Every student must have a NURSE PASS to visit the clinic.
  2. No student will leave the clinic, if seen, unless we have signed their pass to give to you.  We will also write the time the students leaves.  If they state they didn't get this, then they were not seen in the clinic.
From Townview School Nurse, Stephanie Dodds, BSN, RN
COVID

We do not have covid tests.  If this changes, the school nurse will send out further information.  Currently, you should seek a test either at CVS, Walgreens, or your doctor.  Additionally, tests are still available from https://www.covidtests.gov/ .  The DISD testing sites are not currently open.

DISD follows the CDC guidelines for covid.  This morning the CDC changed their guidelines, DISD has not yet decided to change the policy.  Currently, students will need to isolate for 5 days from the date of their first symptom or when they receive a positive test, which came first.  This will be an excused absence.  They do not need to have a second test to return to school, however we ask that they mask for the 5 days after their return.  We are still contact tracing, so if asked, we will need to know who the student sat by and if they were masked or not.  They may return after those 5 days given that they have been fever free without medication for 24 hours.  If they are feeling worse, they should seek the care of a doctor who can extend their excused absence.

From Townview School Nurse, Stephanie Dodds, BSN, RN
Reminder
  • A reminder for all parents and students. Students should stay home if they have any of the following, especially if they have been traveling or in contact with someone who has covid.
    • Cough, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
    • Chills/repeated shaking with chills
    • Muscle aches/body aches/fatigue
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Loss of taste or smell
    • Nausea/vomiting/diarrhea
    • Fever of 100.4 or greater
The latest strain does not always appear with a cough and/or fever.  Most are with a headache and sore throat, but this is also the same as many other viruses, so we need everyone's help.  We do have populations in this school, both staff and students, that still are at risk of becoming very ill with covid.  Plus, keeping everyone as healthy as possible is more conducive to learning.

  9. A monitor, either a volunteer or one appointed by the principal, shall be present at all on-campus activities. However, no monitor or employee of the District may be required to attend a meeting if the content of the speech at the meeting is contrary to the beliefs of the monitor or employee.

  13. The teacher sponsor shall keep a log of all such meetings, indicating the place and time of meetings and provide this to the school Principal.
  14. The cost of repair of any damage to District property (teachers’ or students’) incurred during such meetings shall be borne by the person(s) responsible and may result in denial of future access to the building.

The Map Assessment will be administered 3 times during this school year. Our first testing window will be September 6th – 16th. Most students should be familiar with this assessment. We are now preparing for the administration of the Beginning of Year of BOY MAP Assessment (Math and Reading) for all 9th grade students.

  • For BOY, the Reading MAP will be administered September 6 – 9, 2022
  • The Math MAP will be administered September 12 – 15, 2022.
