District Accolades -- 10/26/2017

October 26, 2017 Board Meeting

Two district schools were at the center of national attention recently as they hosted directors from across the country who visited to see their successful AVID programs in action. Staff at Felix Botello Elementary and A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School shared their unique instructional strategies that are helping to make their programs a success in Dallas ISD.

Former Dallas Cowboy Rocket Ismail spoke to students at Gabe P. Allen Elementary where America’s team transformed the school into a PLAY 60 Fitness Zone. The zone provides students new spaces to play and be active and encourages students to live healthy lifestyles.

Atwell Middle School hosted Lockheed Martin on campus during Engineering Day. It was an exciting day for many Atwell students as they had the opportunity to sit in an F-35 cockpit simulator to experience what it’s like to pilot a fighter aircraft.

Employees from Hilton Worldwide and representatives from REAL School Gardens helped plant a new learning garden at John Ireland Elementary. The work improves upon and renovates the seeds of an earlier garden – including one that draws monarch butterflies. New features will include raised flower and vegetable gardens, a covered outdoor classroom, a water feature, birdhouses and more.

The Dallas ISD Teen Board officers for the 2017-2018 are: President, Glenda Meyer, Moises Molina High School; Vice President, Lucky Lawhorn, Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy; Secretary, Reagan Ruffin, Skyline High School; and Community Service Chair, Alexandra Brooks, Woodrow Wilson High School.
