District Accolades from the January 22, 2015 Board Meeting
 
Congratulations to Etana King, winner of the 2015 MLK Jr. Oratory Competition.
Etana delivered an inspirational speech during the 23rd annual event at the Majestic Theatre last Friday. She is a fifth-grade student from John Neely Bryan Elementary. Camilla Meza, a fifth-grade student from Thomas Tolbert Elementary, placed second. Hanna Wesley took third place. She is a fifth-grade student from Charles Rice Learning Center.

Hats off to U.S. History teacher Shareefah Nadfir Mason for receiving an award from the Sons of the American Revolution.
Ms. Mason was honored with the Tom and Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award, which recognizes an individual for outstanding instruction on the Revolutionary War era. Ms. Mason is a teacher at Boude Storey Middle School. As part of her award, she will travel to the Freedoms Foundation Summer Teacher Graduate Workshop at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

Congratulations to “Trini” Garza Early College High School teacher for receiving a scholarship from the NFL.
Chad Slaughter, a teacher and former NFL player, has been awarded The Trust Scholarship. The scholarship, presented by the NFL, is worth $20,000. Mr. Slaughter plans to use the scholarship to pursue his master’s degree in information systems, which will enable him to teach dual credit classes for Garza and Mountain View College.
