What is Public School Choice?

As Dallas continues to grow and transform, so must its public education system. There is no debate that Dallas ISD must prepare its students to thrive in a future world that will continue to change. Thriving in the future requires the ability to think critically and creatively, solve problems, with no obvious solutions, make judgment about alternative points of view, communicate effectively, work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds, and navigate unprecedented levels of information. It demands that students are resilient, imaginative, and curious about the world around them.

As the district seeks to ensure that all students graduate from high school ready for college and career, Public School Choice will be a mechanism for growing the range of options so that all Dallas ISD students can attend a “best-fit school.”

A “best-fit school” is a school where educators can more meaningfully and more deeply engage students intellectually by tapping into their specific interests, aspirations, and preferred learning styles. Choice Schools will showcase a single, school-wide "anchor model" around which all teaching and learning happens, such as a Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) model, a performing and visual arts model, or a Montessori model.

We know that all kids are unique individuals. They learn in different ways; they aspire to different careers; and they are interested in different subjects. The more "best-fit" options, the better. The goal is clear: If all students are able to attend a high-quality, “best-fit school,” then they will realize their full academic potential.

¿Qué es una Escuela Pública de Opción?

Ya que Dallas continúa desarrollándose y transformándose, también debe hacerlo el sistema de educación pública. No hay duda que el Dallas ISD debe preparar a sus estudiantes para prosperar en un mundo futuro que continuará evolucionando. Prosperar en el futuro requiere de la capacidad de pensar crítica y creativamente, resolver problemas sin soluciones obvias, opinar sobre distintos puntos de vista, comunicarse con eficacia, trabajar en colaboración con personas de diversos orígenes, y navegar en niveles de información sin precedentes. Ello exige que los estudiantes sean capaces de seguir adelante, que tengan imaginación y curiosidad por el mundo que les rodea.

La finalidad del distrito es asegurar que todos los estudiantes se gradúen de la preparatoria listos para la universidad y para una carrera. La Escuela Pública de Opción será un mecanismo para aumentar el ámbito de opciones para que todos los estudiantes de Dallas ISD puedan asistir a una escuela “que compagine con sus intereses”.

En este tipo de escuela donde los educadores pueden motivar a los estudiantes a participar intelectualmente de una manera más significativa y más intensa al centrarse en sus intereses específicos, aspiraciones, y estilos de aprendizaje preferidos. Las escuelas de opción presentarán un solo “plan de estudios modelo” a nivel escolar en el cual se muestra la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, como ciencias/tecnología/ingeniería/matemáticas (modelo STEM), un modelo de artes visuales y escénicas, o el modelo Montessori.

Sabemos que todos los niños son únicos, que aprenden de diferentes maneras, tienen aspiraciones a diferentes carreras, y se interesan por diferentes asignaturas. Entre más opciones haya que más se ajusten a sus intereses, mejor para el estudiante. El objetivo es claro: Si todos los estudiantes pueden asistir a una escuela de alta calidad que compagine con sus intereses, entonces lograrán su potencial académico.
